What's New?I am about to change the site. Soon this website will be re-named "Act Of Living" and will have a new domain, actofliving.com.au, and julianmcnally.com will go into hibernation before becoming a more conventional blog. My psychological practice will be hosted at actofliving.com.au.
For reasons that are boring and unnecessary to go into here, my practice phone number is changing. The current number will expire on December 6, 2008. The new number is "live" today (November 12), but for obvious reasons I am not publicising the number online. However, if you receive an email or SMS from me, or if you listen to the voicemail greeting on the old number, the new number will be provided. Please use that number from now on. I've uploaded a couple of versions of an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy exercise I call Thoughts On The Highway. You can download the audio files and find out more under Psychological Services.
Dr Russ Harris has published 'The Happiness Trap', a self-help book based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. If you are already a client of mine, or if you are thinking of coming to see me, I recommend you read it and practise the exercises.
Check out the book's website at www.thehappinesstrap.com. You'll find some valuable resources at the site including e-courses that give you the opportunity to put the principles of ACT into practice without having to see a therapist. You can also subscribe to Russ' excellent "Happiness Trap" newsletter to get a taste of how ACT helps free people from their own "happiness traps". From November 1st 2006, you will be able to claim a rebate through Medicare for services from a registered psychologist. You do need to have a referral from your GP, and only certain mental health conditions and specified treatments are eligible for the rebates. I recommend you read the fact sheet from the Australian Psychological Society first. If you are making an appointment with me and wish to claim the rebate, please bring your GP referral with you.
There's also usually some new and useful information on my blog - feel free to comment on the postings in there. What's Free? Try the mindfulness exercises I developed in my old job at RMIT University. Mindfulness exercises such as these are an essential component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, so if you're interested in this approach, consider these a 'taster'. Make sure you read the disclaimer though. |
